Firefox

I have downloaded Firefox and some of the apps that I didn’t have, ok so other than upgrading my Adobe there wasn’t much.  It was nice that all my del.ico.us bookmarks were automatically imported, but its a real bummer that Media Player won’t work with it.  I know that its a problem for supporting the Racer software too.

Cant wait to hear more about what we are going to do with Firefox next week!

Gaming

Well, I thought that todays session was pretty cool!  I really liked the video, that was awesome, the graphics!!!!  The best part was watching Kel dancing, I would have paid to see that anyday, LOL.

As for the reasons that libraries would get into the gaming business…..hmm, well there is the idea behind creating virtual worlds inwhich to explore places in history, or fantasy to see what Ancient Roman civilization would have been like for example.  Those are pretty cool.  The idea behind providing virtual reference on SL as well.

Facebook, MySpace, etc

I have had a Facebook account for a little bit, but haven’t used it much.  I am not sure how comfortable I feel with sharing all this information for the world to see.  Most of my online group experience has been in restricted groups where you need a password to access (not the bad kind, but the kind where security is important)  Anyway, I don’t put too much info on there, on the other hand its pretty cool to find people that you haven’t seen in a while, which is what I am hearing is happening a lot.  I don’t know what I would do if my kids were to ask about an account, I worry about their safety and I think that with most types of internet communication it is self limited access, ie you limit what you tell to whom.  However with Facebook and MySpace anyone can see it and read what others have written, and its pretty much required to add in a lot of personal information, where as things like blogs you are pretty anonymous.  My 2c thats all!!

Last.fm and RedKid.net

Ok so Last.fm is pretty cool its a lot like Musicmatch or Yahoo music though.  RedKid.net, although was interesting, I was frustrated, I had this nifty sign created then couldn’t take a screenshot to import into my blog, grr!

Library Thing

Who needs Amicus, or OCLC? Ok, so you still need them for locations, but hey this site has book reviews and ISBNs!!  ISBNs!!  How cool.  Well, maybe, perhaps I am not cool because I am getting excited about ISBNs.  I think that this site is pretty neat though.  I don’t think that I would have time to really put anything in this, but if I am looking for a book I will definitely check it out.

Further Discussion Web 2.0

Perhaps I didn’t spend enough time reading, or perhaps I just didn’t get it, but the articles that I read didn’t seem to hit home to me.  They discussed the theory behind Web 2.0 however they fell short on discussing the application of Web 2.0 to Library Users.  I think that this is an important step in convincing staff in and outside of the library of the relevance of Web 2.0 and its impact on faculty and students research endeavours.

Wikis

Although Wikis aren’t new to me, I was surprised to see so many different types.  I have used PBWiki exclusively and find that it is very simple to manipulate, especially with its new features.  Our department has one that we have been adding our procedures to.  In addition to that Wiki, I created one last term for our group project.  We were constantly emailing around copies of an edited paper and sometimes people were editing older copies, etc.  It was easier having it on the Wiki in the most updated form for all to edit and see.

RSS Feeds

Ok, so I think that I have procrastinated long enough over these RSS feeds.  I kept thinking that there must be something that I must be missing.  I have enabled RSS feeds on my blog and I have also subscribed to a bunch.  These include MSNBC, CTVNewsnet, and the Wiki for for the procedures for our department.  By far the most useful application that I find for RSS feeds are for pages that AREN’T updated frequently.  It drives me nuts to find a million emails when I open up Outlook for news that I am not going to read, however things like the procedures page which I wouldn’t visit too often I find it helpful to be kept aware of these updates.
